Sweet Velvet (Tribute to Lou Reed)

Sweet Velvet is a re-imagined, tribute to Lou Reed, based on the “Velvets” Sweet Jane. The words are mine, based around the original song structure. Many of the chords have also changed but I hope that it captures the magic of the original. My lyrics draw from my own experiences in bands and the “broken” music industry and are “I hope” a fitting tribute to the influence and genius of Lou Reed. The first 2 verses were written 10 years ago, on the day that he died, 27/10/2013 and it was finished 2023.

I’m sitting in the corner.
With my head in my hands
It seems a good time to contemplate.
The death of the man
He taught me to say what I think.
And not try to understand-this crazy world.
So, I’m writing constant streams of poetry.
To take me forward and never back

So I’m standing at the corner
With my guitar in my hand
gives me time to contemplate.
Of the death of my band
Pulled apart by forces.
I don’t fully understand.
All the egos and the attitudes
Those who won’t or don’t or can

It’s a confusing art reality.
A path through musical dreamlands
Of, commercial crap and marketing
In which everyone gets scammed
Where the sound of lies fill a singers ears
Where art gets squashed and canned
It doesn’t really matter any way.
Because the path was never unplanned.
So, you may-as-well enjoy the trip.
There’s no other reason for you to take it.
If you want to be a part of it
Chances are that you won’t make it.
And if you decide to walk on down
You know that you can’t fake it.
You know that you can’t fake it.
