Emily Sings

from Blue and Hazy by Eddie Mole

about

Emily Sings is a "dark and moody" song that was inspired by a performance by the talented Bristol, cult artist Emily Breeze.
The Song. The lyrics were scribbled in a notebook when watching Emily perform at a food festival, while many of the audience either posed or shoveling food and drink down their necks.
The song was kept nice slow and dark to fit the “Emily” vibe.

Recording notes: It was more difficult than expected and a learning process. Without drums the guitar and bass were also the rhythm section and had to be spot on. I’m very happy with the results.

Instruments: I envisaged using Pete's double bass but it didn’t have the sustain needed for the long notes so Pete suggested trying his fretless. This sorted the tone and sustain but was too low and boomy so percussive bass was added using a Sidejack 6, played tic-tac style.
The guitar is an acoustic Taylor 320, with a Strymon Big Sky generating the background swells. That is also used on the solos. It sounded best recorded in stereo and played strongly to keep the percussive qualities tight and the pedal “singing”.
Vocal: Straightforward to record and tweaked by Charlie Lintern in the studio. Some was redone after I had corona virus and I am sure that it has changed my voice has slightly.

lyrics

Emily Breeze is singing a song
She moves with purpose
She sings it dark and strong

She sings with conviction
About skin and hair
Songs about crucifixion
And how nobody cares

Emily Breeze is singing her song
She moves with elegance
She sings it dark and strong

Of blackened trees
And dangerous places
Of cool moist moss
And shadowy faces
Reaching out like the dark

Emily…..sings
Emily fades from the white
And bleeds into the red
Then sinks into the black
Emily is looking back
